SessionCam enhances privacy controls in advance of GDPR

We have previously shared our preparations for meeting the requirements of new GDPR legislation that comes into force on 25th May 2018. Today, we are sharing an update on our progress and announcing new enhanced privacy controls.

GDPR stands for General Data Protection Regulation and will strengthen and unify data protection for individuals within the European Union (EU). Under GDPR, individuals visiting your website have the right to choose whether they consent to their data being processed. You can access the ICO guide to GDPR here.

SessionCam is used by clients to understand and improve the customer experience they deliver on their website.

All SessionCam clients are already advised to inform their site visitors of their use of SessionCam and the purpose for which the data collected is used. Most frequently, this is achieved by clear statements within their website privacy policy.

Some clients may use SessionCam to collect data on areas of their website where personal or sensitive information is entered. However, it’s worth noting that within these areas, SessionCam does not collect Payment Card Industry (PCI) data such as credit card or bank account as we automatically recognize fields containing PCI data and do not record them.

GDPR applies to those visitor sessions where personal or sensitive information is entered.

We both (our clients and ourselves) have responsibilities to make sure that we comply with GDPR.  As the data controller, our clients are in control of the data SessionCam records and we keep them informed of how we use it.

In February, we announced that SessionCam had been accredited for ISO 27001 certification by the British Standards Institution (BSI). Holding an ISO 27001 certificate is considered adequate in protecting Personally Identifiable Information (PII) under GDPR.

From today, clients can enhance their privacy policy statements to include new features that provide options that enable an individual user to choose the data that should be collected by SessionCam. Further details on these features and how to implement them are available on our support website or via your Account Manager.

SessionCam already includes strong controls on data retention that allow clients to configure the period of time that we store the data we collect for them. Today, we would also like to remind all clients to review their data retention period on the “Account Settings” screen within SessionCam. Changes to the data retention configuration can be requested through our support team or  via your SessionCam Account Manager.
